The Rhythm of the Winter

It’s cold in my heart and cold in my world
And time appears frozen in rain.
The sun hasn’t shone for a decade or two
And it may never shine again

Rain drums on the roof and taps on the panes,
While the wind chime chatters and whirls
The inlet is frosted with white caped waves
The wind kicks it up in swift swirls

Winter is here and the dark days have come
Its time to just go back to bed
Sleep for a week or for maybe a month,
The covers up over my head

The rain starts to croon a favorite tune
A tune I’ve known many a year
The wind chime will join the melody soon
The harmony ringing out clear

The cold in my heart will begin to thaw
The music will draw out a smile
Laughter will smooth over every flaw
And I’ll hum along for a while

So let the rain dance, let the wild wind blow
Let long winter days settle in
Some things I can’t change, but one thing I know
The winter’s outside, not within!!

The Rains Begin

The rain spilling down her soft cheek
Marked her wrinkles with rivulets
Of sorrow.

Immeasurable agony
Mingling with the rain on her face
As she wept.

Endless and enduring sorrow;
A love, lost even to her dreams,
Still burning.

Will the pain ever cease to tear
At her heart and her weary mind
This side of death?

Will the death of her fading mind
Be enough to silence the pain?
Will it linger?

How cruel is life, how unfair,
If all she remembers of him
Is loneliness?

I listen to the weeping night.
She sleeps and dreams he’s by her side.
And I weep, too.

Halloween Hauntings

Walking in the darkness
A whisper in your ear
Don’t look back, don’t turn around
They might be getting near

Eerie voices in the night
And if you look you’re theirs
Just keep walking, move along
The darkness never cares

Hurry on, just hurry
They’re breathing down your back
Don’t you feel their burning eyes
Just run, they’re on your track

Will you reach the doorway
Before they get to you
For if they take you with them
Your Halloweens are through

Halloween on the Wing

Riding on the wings of darkness
Foreshadowing the night
Coal black feathers like night's heavens
Without hope's bright starlight

Halloween is Nigh!!!

There’ll be goblins at your door fairly soon
With witches in the air on their broom
Halloween is nigh, when the moon lights up the sky
To enchant each little ghostie and each goon!!!!

Becoming Rock

I am becoming inert, unmoving,
Chained to earth.
I am becoming rock, forever bound in one place

Life comes in to slap me in the face,
Wash over me, push me deeper into the earth;
Then it runs away, Laughing,
Waving mockingly for me to come and play
But I can’t, I am becoming rock

Oh Lord, I am afraid that I will never be alive again.
I’m afraid I will never be able to rise,
To move from the edges of life.
I am afraid that gravity will pin me forever
Just out of reach of joy, of hope, of love.

Oh lord, teach this rock to sing!
For if I can sing, bound in chains to the hard ground,
Then I can also learn to fly.
Oh Lord, teach this rock to sing once more!

18 Hours in My World

The rain passed through, the skies cleared and a thumbnail moon rose over the inlet, but by morning the mist filled the inlet again.

Autumnal Joys

The summer turns its face to fall
The leaves begin to die
The petals drop from every bloom
The clouds cluster and cry
And yet with all the signs of death
The air is filled with life
For with the colors of bright joy
Each dying leaf is rife

Lift up a song to autumn’s days
And let your heart be light
For winter will not last for long
And dark gives way to light

The moon’s begun her jaunt across the sky
With all the little stars waving good-bye
The wispy clouds, like windswept tresses fly,
Across her face, as silent as a sigh
