The Dark Half of the Year

The dark half of the year is here,
The day is swiftly gone,
There is no respite from the dark,
But we must carry on.

The spirit of the dark whispers
Upon my roof all night
And wraps my dreams in winter mists
Void of even starlight.

It almost feels as if the night
Will go on endlessly,
But there is light just down the path
Beyond where I can see.

For soon the solstice will be here
And, from that long night on,
The days will grow into the light
And darkness will be gone.

Sometimes I complain bitterly
At summer’s endless light,
But right now it’s time to complain
About the long, dark night!

Of Dreams and Peace

As evening settles on the bay
the sailboats head for shore,
while wind chimes sing in the soft breeze
of the peace that's in store.

The evening drifts into the night,
my dreams call out to me,
"Come meet us at the moonlight's rim
beyond the starlit sea."

Now I must go to catch my dreams
before they drift away,
but I'll be back with you again
when dawn lights up the bay!

Missing the Moon

Behind the mist and winter clouds
The moon lingers unseen.
He whispers of a starlit night
And of a sky swept clean
Of the last vestiges of rain...
As if they'd never been.

Oh, such a night I used to know,
A summer, now long past.
When starlight swept beyond my sight
A bright array and vast,
Until it reached the end of time
And dawn returned at last.

Tonight the rain taps on the roof
And clouds blanket the sky,
But summer will return one day,
The stars will once more fly,
And I will see the moon again,
Winking, as he drifts by.
