Friday Night in Paradise

It’s Firefly and Candlelight,
And everything’s alright
Tomorrow might bring stress and pain;
Today was one long fight.
But right now I have Firefly
And tea, and candlelight.

The candles softly flickering,
Old friends on my TV,
A cup of tea, a comfy chair,
A world made just for me!!

A Messy House

I need to clean my house again,
It seems a month or more
And every step that I now take
Is on a crunchy floor
The windows are a mess with dust
The furniture is too
I have to clean my house again….
Within a week or two!

The Signs of Spring

Saltwater and lilac blossoms
The fragrances of Spring

Mingling on the evening air
Where tiny finches sing.

The wild geese fly, the heron hunts

The sun burns in the sea

And tosses ribbons in the clouds
Above the dark fir trees.

Moments and Memories

WARNING: Goeducks appear in this post!!!

On our little beach we have lots of "visitors", as you may have noticed. Today, however, we had the entertainment of a Geoduck hunt. (It's pronounced gooeyduck for the uninitiated!)

First step is to pick where to start digging on a beach filled with geoducks.
You may start with a shovel

And make some headway at first,

But Geoduck hunting requires that you get dirty and that you get deep into the sand...

But the prize is worth the work and the dirt... especially if all you did was watch it being done!

So... okay, they look really disgusting, but they are great eating!

Okay, they are really, really disgusting looking.... Hence the warning at the start!

Ft Lewis Freedom Fest 2008

On May 17th, when the heat reached the mid 90's, the women of Mosby's Rangers (as re-enacted in the Puget Sound region) set out for the Ft Lewis Freedom Fest and a busy day of living history. Wth the support of only our dear Pvt Ridley we began the process of setting up house! Of course, the cutest among us deserve special attention....

Having finsihed setting up the children's section of the house, they watch as the women put the final touches on the rest of the house.

At last, all the work is done and we settle in for a cup of tea, a chat with some of the women from other units and a bit of needle work to pass the time.

The displays of household items included home made soap and candles, medicinal herbs, a washboard for laundery, The Game of Graces and school slates for the children, some wonderful books from which the ladies can read to each other and lots of wonderful food. Of course the big draw on this hot day was the lemonade which we offered to our gallant soldiers in both Blue and Grey!

And, of course, the men soon got about the business of war.
A little preparation before the battle
The Cavalry formed up for the attack

And then swept in on the Rebels, who were holding their ground at the far end of the field

Under counter fire, even the Cavalry will get out of the way!

Of course, the contrasts between Then and Now were always there for all to see.

After the Battle was over, the visitors began to return to the cool of the tent and the comfort of Southern Hospitality. Even some from the middle ages...

And the most handsome of the Yankee soldiers

And even the visitors from this era were made welcome and were loved!

But one of the most unexpected and honored guests was Mr William Jones, one of the last surviving Buffalo Soldiers!!!

Fun, Friends and lot of lemonade and dill pickles (the Civil War era version of Gatorade). How can you top that for an Armed Forces Day celebration? YOU CAN'T!!!

My Name is Job

My soul is battered by the world,
My heart and mind cast down.
I need You to direct my feet,
Lead me to solid ground,
Wrap me in Your loving arms
And soothe my deepest fears,
Remind me of Your ceaseless love
And dry my weary tears.

I hold to faith, I know Your Grace
I feel Your Love, I see Your Face.

Mother's Day

I had one morning in this week
When I could just sleep in,
But there I was at 6:15
Wide awake again.
I couldn’t figure out why God
Had kicked me out of bed;
I could have just ignored His call
But I got up instead.

I went downstairs to make my tea
And opened my back shade
And then I saw it, right out back;
This day the Lord had made.
And I knew why I’d gotten up
For, if in bed I’d laid,
I would have missed this gentle dawn,
And new buds on parade.
I stepped outside to catch the shot
And heard the songbirds sing;
I smelled the fragrance that new leaves
And budding blossoms bring.
I knew, as I felt life burst forth
From every living thing,
That it is not by accident
Mother’s Day falls in spring?

Psalm 103:1-5

I asked you to lift up my heart,
On mighty wings to soar;
I asked you to give me the strength
To face what lies in store;
I asked you to watch over those
Whom I love and adore;
I asked you to protect them from
The troubles at their door.

I asked you to heal all the pain
That started long before,
And take away their fear and shame.
All that I did implore.
For they can’t join your plans for them
While crumpled on the floor.
Oh Lord lift them on mighty wings
And help their spirits soar.

I feared you had not heard my voice,
In dread I stood alone.
I challenged you to prove your love;
I needed to be shown
That you could even hear my prayers
Upon your mighty throne;
Lift up my heart and let it soar
Where eagle's wings have flown.

I heard a voice speak quietly,
Soothing my deep despair,
It said look up and see my face
For I have heard your prayer;
Know that my love will never fail
For I am always there.
Then I looked up and wept to see
The eagles everywhere!

Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

From Winter to Spring in two weeks!!!

Two weeks ago we had snow
Now today it’s spring
All the trees are budding out
And the birds all sing
Two weeks ago we had snow
Now the leaves are green
What a difference two weeks makes
In our Northwest scene!!!

The Civil War in Tumwater... May 2, 2008

Pre-war planning session....

The gallantry of the Southern Cavalryman lives on...!

Warriors and athletes, both!

Yes, they were all there:

The Blue

The Butternut
And the Grey
Even the Navy showed up for the fight!

When the Infantry wants to take a shot at the Cavalry, they better make that first shot a good one or this is what happens:
The time it takes to re-load is longer than the time it takes for a fast horse to be on top of you...

And, of course, there is the distaff side of the war:

Whenever we women get together conversation inevitably turns to clothing and knitting and sewing ...

And even for the women, carrying on when we're tired is a way of life...

On a side note, Daniel and Jackson, our Cavalry duo, will soon be separated. Daniel will be leaving for Advanced Infantry Training this summer and then he ships out to Afghanistan with a modern Cavalry unit. We will miss him in the 1860's, but we are grateful for his protection and his courage in this century. Please hold him in your prayers as his battlefield becomes quite real.
