What did you come here expecting to see?
The grave of a peasant from Galilee,
The tomb of a carpenter nailed to a tree,
The end of a dream of great victory,
What did you come here expecting to see?

What did you come here expecting to find?
A broken body the cross left behind,
Bloody and battered, condemned and maligned,
Laid out in burial, linen entwined,
What did you come here expecting to find?

Go forth and spread the good news through the land.
Mankind is redeemed by the Son of Man
And lifted to glory at God’s right hand;
Released from the death our sins should demand,
Go forth and spread the good news through the land.

Whatever you came here expecting to see,
Behold, Christ has risen and set us free!
